  • Works on Windows O/S. At a time one barcode can be printed.

  • GNU Barcode
  • GNU Barcode is a tool to convert text strings to printed bars. It supports a variety of standard codes to represent the textual strings and creates postscript output. Can create tables of barcodes (to print labels on sticker pages). It works on Unix related O/s.

  • CdsWare
  • CERN Document Server Software (CDSware) is the software developed by, maintained by, and used at, the CERN Document Server. It allows you to run your own electronic preprint server, your own online library catalogue or a document system on the web. It complies with the Open Archives Initiative metadata harvesting protocol (OAI-PMH) and uses MARC 21 as its underlying bibliographic standard. It is a free software issued under GNU-GPL license.

  • Dienst
  • Dienst is a system for configuring a set of individual services running on distributed servers to cooperate in providing the services of a digital library. It has been written in PERL. It works more comfortably on Unix/Linux run webservers.

  • DeSpace
  • DSpace is a digital library system to capture, store, index, preserve, and redistribute the intellectual output of a university’s research faculty in digital formats. Dspace has been developed jointly by MIT Libraries and Hewlett-Packard (HP). It is now freely available to research institutions world-wide as an open source system.

  • Eprints
  • EPrints is generic archive software under development by the University of Southampton. It is intended to create a highly configurable web-based archive. EPrints primary goal is to be set up as an open archive for research papers, but it could be easily used for other things such as images, research data, audio archives - anything that can be stored digitally by making changes in configuration. It works on Linux O/s and it needs MySQL, Perl modules and Apache webserver.

  • Fedora
  • An Open-Source digital repository management system based on the Flexible Extensible Digital Object and Repository Architecture (Fedora). The Fedora repository system is open source software licensed under the Mozilla Public License. It requires Sun Java Software Development Kit, v1.4. Optionaly one can use MySql or Oracale 9i to create relational databse. It works both on Windows and Unix versions of O/s.

  • Greenstone
  • Greenstone is a suite of software for building and distributing digital library collections. It provides a new way of organizing information and publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM. It is available for both Windows and Linux O/S. It requires Perl software to build collections.

  • Roads
  • The ROADS software is a suite of programs intended to aid in the setting up and day to day running of World-Wide Web based catalogues of on-line resources. Although designed specifically to meet the requirements of the eLib subject gateways, ROADS software will be useful in a variety of other situations and for a variety of other purposes. It works on a variant of the Unix operating system with HTTP Apache webserver and Perl language.

  • SiteSearch
  • The OCLC SiteSearch software provides a comprehensive solution for managing distributed library information resources in a World Wide Web environment. It offers tools that integrate electronic resources under one web interface, provide flexible access to resources, and build text and image databases locally. It works on both Digital Unix and Windows NT O/s.

Library Management Systems:

  • Athenaeum Light
  • Athenaeum Light can handle large catalogues and manage borrower lists easily. As per its developer it is maint for school libraries. As of now its limit of records is 50000. It is available for both Windows and Macintosh. It can even be used in the multiuser environment.

  • Avanthi Circulation System
  • The Avanti circulation system is a simple, scalable, networkable, client/server circulation system that can be deployed in small to medium scale libraries. The end product will be modular: consisting of a system core, circulation module, minimal OPAC, and network and user interfaces. The entire system is written in Java. Avanti 0.3.1 was developed using the Blackdown JDK v1.1.7 on a Linux system with the servlet classes being developed using the Apache Jserv servlet engine.

  • Emilda
  • Emilda is a complete Integrated Library System that features amongst others an OPAC, circulation and administration fuctions, Z39.50 capabilities and 100% MARC compatibility. MARC compatibility is achieved using Zebra in conjunction with MySQL.

  • FireFly
  • FireFly is a Complete Public Library system. It is being written in Python, Perl, with all data being stored in XML. The driving force behind this project is to give public libraries a Free-Software set to run and maintain library systems.

  • Glibms
  • Glibms is Library management software developed using PHP and PostgreSQL to automate the different activities carried out in the library.

  • Java Book Cataloguing System
  • This software is primarily to create a Book Catalog using barcode data from the freely avaliable cuecat(tm) bar code reader. It will use a rdbms backend database, and allow synchronization between different library branches.

  • Koha Open Source Library System
  • Claimed as worlds first Free Open Source Library System. Made in New Zealand by the Horowhenua Library Trust and Katipo Communications Ltd the Koha system is a full catalogue, opac, circulation and acquisitions system.

    To successfully use Koha one need have some additional software:

    A webserver (It was built to work with Apache, but there is no reason it shouldnt work with any other webserver).
    Perl
    Mysql (You could intead use postgres, or another sql based database)
    Perl Modules: Date::Manip
    DBI
    DBD::Mysql (or whatever database system you use)
    AuthenDBI (if you want to use Database based authentication)

  • OpenBook Open Source Library System
  • OpenBook is full feature open source library system developed for use of small school and public libraries. It has been developed based the original Koha open source library system of New Zealand. At present it consists of three modules viz. OPAC, Cataloguing and Circulation. In future includes Acquisition module too. All the modules are web-intraface based. It works on Linux O/S with Apache, Perl and MySql.

  • Open-ILS
  • It is website of an open source Intregrated Library System (ILS), named Evergreen. This software is being developed and maintained by the Georgia Public Library Service for use by the Georgia Library PINES Program, a consortium of 249 public libraries. This software can be downloaded for free, and anyone can contribute to development efforts.

  • PhpMyLibrary is a open source web-based library software having catalouging, circulation, webopac, file managment modules, etc. It also supports import of data from ISIS databases. It requires PHP and MYSQL.

  • This software helps librarians to build web-based subject guides.

  • Seansoft Library Loan Management System 1.17B
  • A useful software for something like a school library. Each student can have a login, from which they loan books. Keeps track of weeks loaned and will alert a supervisor of overdue books. Has mail merge facilities to produce letters to individuals or a list for a noticeboard. Also features backup and basic repair facilities for the database. It requires VB5 Runtimes, DAO.
